■ #2128. "than" としての nor と or [conjunction]

　細江 (447--48) に，比較級とともに用いられる nor への言及がある．

nor=than　これは今日では方言以外には用いられないが，方言としては英米に通じて存するのみならず，古くは北部イギリスの文語に用いられ，James I の著書などにも出るものとして記憶されたい．たとえば，
   It makes a man feel as (=that) there's a good more nor he can see.---Eliot.
   You're no better nor a common tramper.---Thackeray.

　OED の nor, conj.2 によると，この用法の起源は不詳であり，現在では "chiefly Sc., Irish English, U.S. regional, and Eng. regional" とあるように，主として方言に用いられるにすぎない．OED より初例を含めいくつか例を挙げよう．

　・ 1478 R. Cely Let. 10 Oct. in Cely Lett. (1975) 32 In my consayt better unsolde nor solde.
　・ 1573 J. Tyrie Refut. Ansuer Knox f. 4v, He apperis mair wicked, nor Sathan him self.
　・ ?1746 T. Sheridan Brave Irishman ii. 20 I'm sure 'tis better nor your Garlick nor Ingyons in France.
　・ 1792 R. Burns Poems & Songs (1968) II. 606 Ye'll crack your credit wi' mae nor me.
　・ 1840 Thackeray Catherine iv, You're no better nor a common tramper.

　細江には言及されていないが，nor だけではなく or も同様に than の代用として使われてきた歴史があり，しかも nor よりも古い．ただし，この 接続詞 or は nor の「肯定形」としての or ではなく，語源的には接続詞 ere と関連づけられるものである．OED の or, adv.1, prep., and conj.2 の接続詞としての語義3に，やはり "Sc. and Eng. regional (north.)" と方言使用のレーベルが貼られた上で，次のような初例が与えられている．
　

　・ a1325 (c1250) Gen. & Exod. (1968) l. 1510 And hauen mete ðan at is mel More or Ðe gungere twinne del.
　・ c1400 (?c1390) Sir Gawain & Green Knight (1940) 1543 (MED), To yow þat..weldez more slyȝt Of þat art..or a hundreth of seche As I am.

　この or は ere の異形ということだが，ere 自体が than の代用となる例も見られる．例えば，MED の er (conj.(1)) Also ar, or, 3er, 3or では "?a1400(a1338) Mannyng Chron.Pt.1 (Petyt 511) 10148: Cador & hyse..to þe hauen wel raþer cam Er any Saxon to schipe nam." の例がある．
　この最後の例のように "rather ere . . ." が "rather than . . ." と意味的に同等となるのは理解しやすく，このような接点から ere = than という用法上の等式が生まれ，それが ere の異形の or （それから同形の別の接続詞 or）へも拡張したと考えることはできないだろうか．また，時代や方言分布から考えて，or がもとになり nor の対応する用法が生じたとは考えられないだろうか．ここで or と nor の肯定と否定の関係を説明する必要が生じるが，「#987. Don't drink more pints of beer than you can help. (1)」 ([2012-01-09-1])，「#988. Don't drink more pints of beer than you can help. (2)」 ([2012-01-10-1]) でみたような肯定と否定の混同を想定することができるかもしれない．関連して「#1038. then と than」 ([2012-02-29-1]) も参照．
