■ #2824. My pleasure のすすめ (2) [adjacency_pair][politeness][pragmatics]

　[2017-01-16-1]の記事に引き続き，my pleasure という表現について．OED によると，Thank you. への応答としての (it is) my pleasure の初出は1950年とあり，新しい語法であることが分かる．しかし，原型となる用法は以前からあった．pleasure が my などの所有格とともに用いられると「?の意志・望み」 ("that which is agreeable to or in conformity with the wish or will of the person specified; will, desire, choice.") の意となり，15世紀より次のような例が見られる．

　・ 1485 Caxton tr. Lyf St. Wenefryde 2 Whiche..aroos & humbly demaunded hym what was his playsir.
　・ a1500 (c1370) Chaucer Complaint to his Lady 120 With right buxom herte hooly I preye, As your moste plesure, so doth by me.

　MED でいえば，plēsīr(e (n.) の 1(d) の語義が，これに相当する．この語義は現代でも I'd go out and dance the hootchie-kootchie buck naked if that was her pleasure and mine. のような例文に見られ，現役である．この語義を基盤として，標題の会話における語用的表現が現代英語期に発達したのだろう．この語義と関連する句としては，at one's pleasure, to one's pleasure なども中英語期から使われていた．
　一方，標題の「どういたしまして」の用法ほど新しくはないが，申し出に対する応答としての「喜んで」を意味する With pleasure. も初出はかなり遅い．OED では初出が1836年の Dickens となっている．

1836 Dickens Pickwick Papers (1837) ii. 12 'Glass of wine, Sir?' 'With pleasure,' said Mr. Pickwick---and the stranger took wine; first with him..and then with the whole party together.

　My pleasure. にせよ With pleasure. にせよ，pleasure という語を含む句が，比較的最近になって，ある種のポライトネス (politeness) を含意しつつ語用化したということになる．動詞形 please に由来するポライトネスを標示する同形の間投詞が，初期近代英語以降に発達した事実と合わせて，pleasure 周辺はここ数世紀の間「語用づいている」と言えるだろう．please の発達については，「#2644. I pray you/thee から please へ」 ([2016-07-23-1]) を参照．
