■ #2832. PC の特異な点 [political_correctness][sociolinguistics]

　「#2827. PC の歴史」 ([2017-01-22-1]) の記事で，近年の社会言語学上の一大運動としての political_correctness の動向に触れた．一般的な意味で言語の正統性 (orthodoxy) を目指す運動や主張は，英語の歴史でも繰り返し生じてきたが，現代の PC には過去の類似した現象には見られなかった特異な点が3つあるという．Hughes (7) より，指摘箇所を引用しよう．

There are three characteristics which make political correctness a unique sociolinguistic phenomenon. Unlike previous forms of orthodoxy, both religious and political, it is not imposed by some recognized authority like the Papacy, the Politburo, or the Crown, but is a form of semantic engineering and censorship not derivable from one recognized or definable source, but a variety. There is no specific ideology, although it focuses on certain inequalities and disadvantaged people in society and on correcting prejudicial attitudes, more especially on the demeaning words which express them. Politically correct language is the product and formation of a militant minority which remains mysteriously unlocatable. It is not the spontaneous creation of the speech community, least of all any particular deprived sector of it. Disadvantaged groups, such as the deaf, the blind, or the crippled (to use the traditional vocabulary), do not speak for themselves, but are championed by other influential public voices.

　要約すれば，(1) PC は特定の権威によって押しつけられるものではなく，様々な源に発する意味工作・検閲の1形態であること，(2) 偏見を正すという大風呂敷の大義はあるにせよ，特定のイデオロギーと関係づけられるものではないこと，(3) 明確に「居所」のつかめない少数派の闘士によるものであること，となろうか．さらにまとめてしまえば，PC は，社会的権威は握っていないが，世の中の偏見を正したいという正義感をもつ少数派の所産ということになる．
　現在進行中である PC 自体の効果，成果，功罪などを適切に評価することは難しいが，このようにある意味で特異な集団がこの運動を牽引し，この運動の存在感を高めてきたという事実は銘記しておきたい．
