■ #2816. 18世紀の規範主義の再評価について (2) [prescriptive_grammar][prescriptivism][sociolinguistics]

　昨日の記事に引き続き，18世紀の規範主義と各々の文法家の政治的スタンスについての話題．前の記事で触れたように，18世紀に洪水のように規範文法書が出版され，なかには飛ぶように売れたものもあった．この文法書市場の高まりと各文法家の政治的スタンスとは，いかなる関係にあったのだろうか．
　どうやら，特定の政治的スタンスが文法書に埋め込まれ，それが政治的な意味合いをもって受容され，市場を賑わわせた，ということではなさそうだ．むしろ，市場における文法書の人気が潜在的にあるところに，政治的スタンスという要素が加わり，出版や受容という過程が政治化した，ということのようだ．英文法が政争の具となったとも表現できそうだが，実際にはそこまで悪いように具とされたわけでもないようであり，難しい．Beal (101) を引用する．

The 'doctrine of correctness' was thus invoked by writers of all political persuasions, so it would be a mistake to argue that any set of political circumstances created the market for grammars in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It might be wiser to agree with Crowley that 'language becomes a crucial focus of tension and debate at critical historical moments, serving as the site upon which political positions are contested' (2003: 217). Thus, the emergence of these grammars and the accompanying discussions about language and power are symptomatic of the turbulent times in which they were written.

　本記事の標題では「18世紀の規範主義」と銘打ったが，Beal の議論は，上の引用にもある通り19世紀にも当てはまるというし，さらに読み進めると，20--21世紀にも等しく通じるとも述べられている．一見すると，文法書と政治性というのは結びつかないように思われるが，文法書を「正しい語法の集大成」と解釈すれば，いかに文法というものが社会的な「正しさ」と結びつけられる政治の問題に近寄りうるかということが理解されよう．ひいては，人類の歴史において言葉の問題は常に政治の問題だったとも言えるのかもしれない．
　なお，上の引用で言及されている Crowley は，Crowley, T. Standard English and the Politics of Language. London: Palgrave, 2003. のことである．
