■ #4543. subreption [semantic_change][semantics][terminology]

　語の意味変化の典型的なパターンとして，ある語の意味が技術や文化の発展に伴って変化するというもの例がある．例えば，英語 ship は古英語からある古株の単語だが，当時のへっぽこな船と，中世の帆船と，近代の蒸気船と，現代のコンピュータ搭載の最新鋭の船とでは，指示対象の姿形や性能が大きく異なるにもかかわらず，「水に浮かぶ移動手段」という基本機能の点で同一であるために，同じ ship という名で呼ばれている．ship の意味が変化したといえるのかどうかは微妙だが，指示対象が相当に変化してきたということは認めざるを得ないだろう．この手のタイプは，語の意味変化の議論において，しばしば最初に挙げられるタイプの事例である (cf. 「#1873. Stern による意味変化の7分類」 ([2014-06-13-1])，「#1953. Stern による意味変化の7分類 (2)」 ([2014-09-01-1])）．
　Stern はこの種の意味変化を "substitution" と呼んでいる．一方，今回調べるなかで初めて知ったのだが，Pearce (183--84) によると，"subreption" という術語も用意されているようだ．

Subreption A process of semantic change in which objects, entities, social roles, concepts, institutions and so on change over time, but the words for them remain the same. Take, for example, the phrase 'the driver of the car looked at the dashboard'. The emphasized words have their English origins at a time when all wheeled vehicles were powered by horses: the original meaning of drive (a meaning which it still retains) was 'to force to move before one' (which is what a 'driver' did with horses); car is derived from an earlier word meaning 'chariot', and dashboard originally referred to the wooden board located at the fron of a horse-drawn carriage to prevent objects kicked up by the horses' hooves from hitting the driver.

　subreption は通常は「虚偽申請」を意味する法律用語である．普通の辞書では詳しく載っていないほどの専門用語である．OED を引いてみると，言語学用語としては掲載されていないようだ．第1語義は "Misrepresentation or suppression of the truth or facts; an act or instance of this." にとどまる．
　語の意味変化に関して何がどう「虚偽申請」なのかと考えたのだが，こういうことだろうか．例えば，上の引用にもある dashboard は，本来は「馬車馬によって跳ね飛ばされた泥をよける板」ほどの意味だが，それを基準とすると，現在の普通の意味「自動車・飛行機などの計器盤」は，虚偽とはいわずとも原義が隠蔽されてしまっていることは確かだ．現在の意味は dash + board から常識的に推測される意味から遠く離れてしまっている．そのような意味での「虚偽申請」（大げさな呼び方ではあるが）ということだろうか．
　現代日本語では，下駄ではなく靴を入れているのに，いまだに「下駄箱」ということがある．これも厳密にいえば確かに「虚偽申請」ではある（＝突っ込みどころがある）から，subreption の例になるのだろう．
