　[2009-12-15-1], [2009-12-16-1]で見たように，Grimm によってドイツ語史に当てはめられた三区分の原則は，英語史にも波及することになった．だが，それ以前にも，英語の古い段階を指す呼称は存在していた．16，17世紀に古い英語に対する関心が喚起されたとき，人々は今でいう古英語を指して Anglo-Saxon 「アングロサクソン語」と呼んだ．この呼称は現代でもときどき聞かれる．次に Anglo-Saxon と言い切るにはあまりに言語的に異なっており，かといって近代期の英語とも異なっている段階の英語を指す，範囲の曖昧な呼称として Semi-Saxon が用いられた．
　16，17世紀以来，Anglo-Saxon と Semi-Saxon という時代区分の呼称が長らく使われてきたが，1839年に Wright が Middle English という用語を新たに導入した．Wright のいう Middle English は，現在 Middle English として理解されている時代の後期を指していたようである．

The form of our language during the twelfth and the first half of the thirteenth century is generall termed Semi-Saxon; from that period to the time of the Reformation it has received from modern philologists the name of Middle English (Wright 107 cited in OED, s.v. English B. sb. 1a).

　こうして Anglo-Saxon, Semi-Saxon, Middle English という時代区分の呼び名が用いられたが，早くも19世紀後半には別の時代区分が次々と提案されることとなった．
