■ #236. 英語史の時代区分の歴史 (5) [periodisation]

　Morris の英語史の六区分[2009-12-18-1]は一般には広まらなかった．英語史の時代区分について後世に強い影響力を及ぼしたのは，Sweet だった．Sweet は1871年，従来の Anglo-Saxon に代えて Old English という呼称を導入した．

I use 'Old English' throughout this work to denote the unmixed, inflectional stage of the English language, commonly known by the barbarous and unmeaning title of 'Anglo-Saxon' (v, n. 1)

　Old English という呼称の確立によって，Old English, Middle English, Modern English という三区分が不動のものとなった（Sweet, Grammar §594) ．これが現在にまで伝わる "canonical" な英語史の時代区分である．その特徴は以下の如くである．

　Old English: "period of full endings" (e.g. mōna, sunne, sunu, stānas).
　Middle English: "period of levelled endings" (e.g. mōne, sunne, sune, stōnes).
　Modern English: "period of lost endings" (moon, sun, son, stones).

　こうして，英語史の時代区分は再び "triadomany" の伝統へと回帰したのである．
