■ #1186. The Uniformitarian Principle (2) [methodology][uniformitarian_principle]

　[2010-11-04-1]の記事で，言語学の方法論としての「#556. The Uniformitarian Principle」を紹介した．斉一論の原則と訳されるこの原理は，元来は，地質学の分野における革命的な発想だった．18世紀末までの地質学は非科学的，思弁的なものであり，聖書に基づいてノアの洪水に代表される天変地異を基本とする地質観 (catastrophism) に支配されていた．これに対して，スコットランド人 James Hutton (1726--97) が，1795年の著書 Theory of the Earth において，過去の地質現象は，現在の地質現象を進行させているのと同じ自然法則のもとで進行したとする考えを発表した．過去の地質現象は現在の自然現象の注意深い観察によって知ることができる，現在を知ることは過去を知ることへの鍵である，と主張したこの地質観は，それまでの天変地異説を置き換え，科学的地質学の誕生を告げるものとなった．地球の誕生をわずか6千年ほどと見ていた従来の聖書に基づく地質観を転換させたことは，天文学における Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo などの業績と比較される科学史上の革命と言ってよいだろう．
　同じスコットランド人の Sir Charles Lyell (1797--1875) は，Principles of Geology (1830--33) において，Hutton の斉一論の普及に貢献した．Lyell は，地質現象がきわめて長大な時間の経過の中で緩慢に行われること，そしてその過程は一様であることを重視したため，斉一説はしばしば漸進説，斉一過程説，現在主義などと呼ばれることになった．この考え方は，Charles Darwin (1809--82) の進化論にも重要な示唆を与え，科学全般にも影響を与えた．そして，方法論として，言語の歴史的研究にも応用されることになった．
　歴史言語学における斉一論について，Campbell and Mixco (213) による定義を掲げよう．

uniformitarianism, Uniformitarian Principle A fundamental principle of biological, geological and linguistic sciences, which holds for linguistics that things about language that are possible today were not impossible in the past and that things that are impossible today were not possible in the past. This means that whatever is known to occur in languages today would also have been possible in earlier human languages and anything not possible in contemporary languages was equally impossible in the past, in the earlier history of any language. The Uniformitarian Principle came to linguistics from Charles Lyell's formulation of it in geology. It is valuable for reconstruction via the comparative method, where, according to the principle, nothing in reconstruction can be assumed to have been a property of some proto-language if it is not possible in known languages.
