■ #1310. 現代英語の大文字使用の慣例 [punctuation][prescriptive_grammar][capitalisation]

　昨日の記事「#1309. 大文字と小文字」 ([2012-11-26-1]) で，大文字が句読法的な機能に特化してきたことに触れたが，現代英語において，大文字の用途 (capitalisation) にはどのようなものがあるだろうか．Schmitt and Marsden (156) に要約されていたもの箇条書きで記そう．(a)--(c) は頭文字に必ず大文字を用いるべき場合，(d)--(g) はたいてい大文字が使用されるが，揺れのある場合である．

　(a) the opening word of a sentence;
　(b) proper names;
　(c) names of the days of the week and months;
　(d) names of the deity and religious celebrations (God, the Lord, Mass);
　(e) key temporal events or epochs (the New Year, the Middle Ages);
　(f) abstract nouns to which we may want to draw attention (Liberty, Education), along with scholarly or medical disciplines (Mathematics, Psychotherapy, Gerontology) and institutional labels (the State, Government);
　(g) the main words in titles and other words to which we may want to give emphasis;

　ここに含まれていないものも少なくない．『現代英語語法辞典』 (242--45) からいくつか抜き出せば，一人称単数代名詞 I，間投詞 O，詩の各行の最初の文字，小説の巻頭の1語あるいは数語，頭字語 (acronym)，くだけた書き言葉で強勢を表わす部分の文字，掲示・新聞見出し・広告，電報文などでも大文字が使用される．上記の多くの大文字使用には，注意喚起，固有性，何らかの強調，装飾性といった効果が共通して感じられる．ただし，一人称単数代名詞 I や電報文の大文字使用については，歴史的に育まれてきた慣行という側面が強いかもしれない．かつてはデフォルトの文字だった大文字が，中世の小文字の台頭によって役割を限定させていった歴史を思うと，I とともに孤軍奮闘の間投詞 O も今までよく持ちこたえている．
