■ #3582. 中英語期のフランス借用語，ラテン借用語，"mots savants" (2) [french][latin][loan_word][lexicology][etymology][borrowing]

　昨日の記事 ([2019-02-15-1]) で，標題に関する Ellenberger の批評を紹介した．中英語の学問語 (= "mots savants") のソース言語に関する伝統的な見解は，不当にフランス語寄りではないかという問題提起である．では，Ellenberger 自身は，この問題についてどのような姿勢を取るのがふさわしいと考えているのだろうか．論文の終わりに，4箇条を掲げている (149--50) ．

   1. Words are borrowed not once and for all but many times and from many sources.
   2. A Latin word borrowed into either of Anglo-French or English would be given an ending prescribed by Anglo-Norman scribal tradition.
   3. Words could be borrowed from Latin or French depending on what spheres of society the borrowers moved in. Clerics would be more likely to borrow from Latin than would laics.
   4. As the medieval libraries of England contained mainly Latin books and school curricula concentrated on Latin texts, learned words borrowed into French from written Latin sources would be more likely also to have entered English from those same sources than through French.
