■ #3926. 分かち書き，表語性，黙読習慣 [silent_reading][distinctiones][punctuation][grammatology][reading][writing]

　西洋中世の読み書きに関する標記の3つのキーワードは，互いに関連している．語と語の間に空白を入れる分かち書き (distinctiones) の発達により，読者はアルファベットのつながりを表音的 (phonographic) に読み解くのではなく，より表語的 (logographic) に読み解く習慣を育むことができるようになった．結果として，声に出して理解する音読ではなく，頭のなかで語の意味を取る黙読および速読の文化が芽生え，私的に思考したり，大量の情報を処理することが可能になったのである．「#3881. 文字読解の「2経路モデル」」 ([2019-12-12-1])，「#3884. 文字解読の「2経路」の対比」 ([2019-12-15-1]) で挙げた用語に従えば，読解に用いられる神経回路の比重が「音韻ルート」から「語ルート」へとシフトしてきたといってもよいだろう．
　西洋における黙読習慣の発達の時期については，権威あるラテン語に対して土着語 (vernacular) への気付きがきっかけとなったタイミングとして，8世紀頃を指摘する見解がある．この見解に基づいて，Cook (152--53) が上述の解説を次のようにうまくまとめている．

Punctuation marks started as an aid for reading Latin aloud, in the form of various dots and other marks. These were necessary because Latin was written without word spaces, making texts difficult to read aloud on sight. Around the eighth century AD, it became usual to put a space between words. According to Saenger (1997), this transformed reading from reading aloud to reading in silence. Without spaces, the reader had to test out loud what the text meant; with spaces, the reader could interpret the text without saying it aloud and they could read and write with greater privacy since their activity was not audible to other people; indeed Galileo saw the advantages of 'communicating one's most secret thoughts to any other person' (cited in Chomsky 2002: 45). Hence, once the lexical route became possible for reading European languages, authors became more daring individuals; and the speed of reading could be increased beyond the speed of articulation. As Harris (1986) put it, 'One is tempted to compare the introduction of the space as a word boundary to the invention of the zero in mathematics . . .'.

　それにしても「分かち書きの発見は数学におけるゼロの発見に比較できる」というのは並一通りではない評価だ．
