■ #210. 綴字と発音の乖離をだしにした詩 [spelling_pronunciation_gap][youtube][gh]

　現代英語の綴字と発音の乖離は，英語史上の主要な問題であり，本ブログでも定番の話題となってきた（関連記事を参照→spelling_pronunciation_gap）．
　今日はこの乖離をだしにした詩を紹介する．Gelderen (14) が掲載しているもので，"unknown source" とされている．couplet で脚韻を踏んでいるが，ほぼすべての組で綴字が異なっているのがミソ．綴字と発音の乖離を逆手に取ったことば遊びとして実によくできている．

I take it you already know
Of tough and bough and cough and dough?
Some may stumble but not you,
On hiccough, thorough, slough, and through?
So now you are ready perhaps
to learn of less familiar traps?
Beware of heard, a dreadful word
that looks like beard and sounds like bird,
and dead is said like bed, not bead or deed.
Watch out for meat, great, and threat that
rhyme with suite, straight, and debt.
