■ #1426. 通時的変化と共時的変異 (2) [diachrony][variation][language_change][evolution]

　「#1040. 通時的変化と共時的変異」 ([2012-03-02-1]) ，「#1025. 共時態と通時態の関係」 ([2012-02-16-1]) の記事で，diachronic change （通時的変化）と synchronic variation （共時的変異）の表裏一体の関係について論じた．今回は，この両者の関係について，Croft の意見に耳を傾けよう．
　Croft は，言語進化論の立場から，言語変化とは，広い観点からみた言語変異そのものであると論じている．Croft によれば，変異 (variation) には3つのレベルが区別される．まず，"First-order variation is the variation that occurs in individual occasions of language use" (71) である．これは，同じ話者においてすら，音声，意味，文法は時と場合により変動するという意味での変異である．次に，"Second-order variation is built on first-order variation: certain first-order variant productions take on sociolinguistic value in the speech community" (72) とある通り，ある変項（例えば hunting vs huntin'）が社会言語学的な意味合いをもつという意味での変異である．最後は，"Third-order variation is second-order variation that has become fixed conventions in different speech communities as these have diverged and/or entered into contact over the history of humankind" (72) である．これは，異なる言語間，異なる変種間に見られる変異であり，慣習的に別物とみなされている変異のことである．
　Croft は，このように3段階の共時的な変異を概念的に区別した上で，実際にはこの3レベルは連続しており，この連続体をもって通時変化と解するべきだと主張する．共時態と通時態が，この連続体において融合するのだ，と．

Taking variation as a central fact of language leads to a dynamic model of synchronic language and allows for a simple integration of synchrony and diachrony in language. Language change is simply linguistic variation at a broader scope, and more specifically, linguistic variation that proceeds from first-order innovations to second-order variants to third-order divergence. (72)
