■ #3597. 1660年，R. H. Squire による英語アカデミー設立の提案 [academy][dryden][restoration][history]

　英語史において，英語アカデミー設立の提案と頓挫の繰り返しは特筆すべき出来事である．1582年にイタリアに設立された Accademia della Crusca，そして1635年にフランスに設立された Academie française を横目に，イギリスも16世紀後半より同様の組織の設立を目指していたが，17世紀の時代変化に振り回され，実現を阻まれていた．
　最初に設立の気運が高まったのは，王政復古期である．1662年に Charles II の認許により Royal Society of London が設立され，1664年には英語を統制する組織が設置された．そこでは，「#3220. イングランド史上初の英語アカデミーもどきと Dryden の英語史上の評価」 ([2018-02-19-1]) でみたように，John Dryden (1631--1700) もさかんに発言した．
　しかし，アカデミー設立の発想は，もう少し早く，共和制期の1650年代から，フランスの影響を受けてくすぶりだしていたようで，1660年には R. H. Squire なる人物が，New Atlantis . . . Continued と題する本のなかで具体的な提案を示している (Baugh and Cable 258--59) ．Freeman によれば，R. H. Squire とは，グレゴリー式望遠鏡を初めて作った物理学者・化学者 Robert Hooke (1635--1703) のことだろうという．彼は，フランスのアカデミー設立の経緯もよく知っていたようだ．Freeman (296) よりその提案を引用しよう．

   We have besides these in the Imperial City one Emminent Academy of selected wits: whose endeavours are to reform all errors in books, and then to licence them; to purifie our Native language from Barbarism or Solecism, to the height of Eloquence, by regulating the termes and phrases therof into constant use of the most significant words, proverbs, and phrases, and justly appropriating them either to the Lofty, mean, or Comic stile. These likewise translate the best Authors, and render them in their genuine sense to us very perspicuous: and make Dictionaries in all languages, wherein the proper terms of art for every notion and thing in every trade, manufacture and science is genuinely rendered and with its derivation very perspicuous.
   We have also in each of the provinciall Cities (which have Universities) Free Schools for the attaining of the Languages, Singing, Dancing, Fencing, Riding, and writing, either by Brachugraphy, Hieroglyphic, or an Instrument we have made to write two copies at once, at one and the same motion, for dispatch. For all which we have public Governours and masters sit for each place respectively; chosen by the representative body of that Academie every three years. (pp. 42--44)

　17世紀半ばに復活したアカデミー設立のアイディアの源流に，巨匠 Dryden を据え置きたい気持ちは分からないでもない．しかし，実際には Dryden に先立つ人物がいた，というのが Freeman 論文の主張である．Dryden が発言した1660年代までには，すでにアカデミーへ設立への関心は一般的なものとなっていたということだ．
