■ #3598. 1664年，Dryden による英語アカデミー設立提案への賛意 [academy][dryden][restoration][history]

　昨日の記事「#3597. 1660年，R. H. Squire による英語アカデミー設立の提案」 ([2019-03-03-1]) と関連して，1664年に Dryden が示した英語アカデミー設立提案への賛意について．Dryden は，1664年6月の Rival Ladies の献呈の辞において，フランスの Academie française を意識しながら次のように述べている． (Freeman 294) ．

I am sorry that, speaking so noble a language as we do, we have not a more certain Measure of it, as they have in France: when they have an 'Academy' erected for that purpose, and endowed with large privileges by the present King.

　そして，その半年後の12月7日に，Royal Society は英語アカデミーの設立の動議を提出し，投票を行なっている．その投票については，Birch が History of the Royal Society (I, p. 499) にて以下の記録を残している (Freeman 294) ．

It being suggested that there were persons of the Society whose genius was very proper and inclined to improve the English tongue, particularly for philosophic purposes, it was voted that there should be a committee for improving the English language; and that they meet at Sir Peter Wyche's lodgings in Gray's-Inn once or twice a month, and give an account of their proceedings, when called upon.

　この引用の最初のほうにある genius として念頭に置かれていた人物の1人が Dryden だったことは疑いようがない．
　昨日の記事で取り上げたように，Dryden は17世紀半ばの英語アカデミー設立の運動の火付け役ではなかった．しかし，その運動に積極的に関与して，目立った働きをしたことは確かだろう．合わせて，「#3220. イングランド史上初の英語アカデミーもどきと Dryden の英語史上の評価」 ([2018-02-19-1]) も参照されたい．
