■ #6172. 形容詞比較級接尾辞 -er と単純形副詞のゼロ語尾の接点？ [adjective][adverb][comparison][oe][germanic][suffix][ablative][flat_adverb][-ly]

　一昨日，昨日と「#6170. 形容詞の比較級 -er と最上級 -est の起源を求めて」 ([2026-03-19-1]) と「#6171. 形容詞比較級接尾辞 -er の起源の1つかもしれない */-o:z-/ は古い奪格語尾を含む」 ([2026-03-20-1]) として取り上げてきた話題から，少し脇道に逸れてみたい．
　Lass (§8.4.2; p. 207) に当たるなかで，古英語で最も典型的だった副詞形成語尾 -e が，古英語の形容詞比較級接尾辞 -ra を構成する要素と起源を一にするという可能性に行き当たった．起源となる形態は，昨日の記事で話題にした通り，ゲルマン祖語の o-stem の奪格語尾ということである．ただし，その奪格語尾にも母音階梯の異なる2つの形態を想定している．

The most widespread OE formation is in {-e}, probably from the e-grade of the ablative, corresponding to L {-ē} < */-e:-d/: L facillim-ē 'easily', whose ablative origin is clear in OL facilum-ēd. So OE wīd 'wide', adv wīd-e, gelīc 'similar', adv ge-līc-e, etc.

　これに続き，単純副詞と -ly 副詞の各々の起源にも言い及んでおり興味深いので，そちらも引用する．

Since {-e} was typically added to adverbialize the extremely common adjectives in -līc, the complex {-līce} was reinterpreted during OE times as an adverbial ending in itself, and there were thus a number of doublets off the same base: from heard 'hard' the adverbs heard-e, heard-līc-e, from hwæt 'brave' hwæt-e, hwæt-līc-e. (Our ModE adverbial {-ly} is of course the descendant of {-līce}.
