■ #1087. lingua franca (2) [elf][model_of_englishes][global_language][koine]

　昨日の記事[2012-04-17-1]を受けて，lingua franca という用語について詳しく調べてゆくことにする．まずは，学習要英英辞書の定義と例文を眺めてみよう．

　・ OALD8: a shared language of communication used between people whose main languages are different: English has become a lingua franca in many parts of the world.
　・ LDOCE5: a language used between people whose main languages are different: English is the lingua franca in many countries.
　・ LAAD2: a language used between people whose main languages are different: Swahili is the lingua franca of East Africa.
　・ COBUILD English Dictionary: A lingua franca is a language or way of communicating which is used between people who do not speak one another's native language: English is rapidly becoming the lingua franca of Asia.
　・ CALD3: a language which is used for communication between groups of people who speak different languages but which is not used between members of the same group: The international business community sees English as a lingua franca.
　・ MED2: a language that people use to communicate when they have different first languages: German is a useful lingua franca for tourists in the Czech Republic.
　・ MWALED: a language that is used among people who speak various different languages: English is used as a lingua franca among many airline pilots.

　いずれも似たり寄ったりで「母語や主要言語が互いに異なる者どうしの間でコミュニケーション手段として用いられる言語」ほどの意味である．学習者英英辞書だけに，例文では圧倒的に英語を主題とするものが多いが，LAAD2 や MED2 では Swahili や German が主語である．英語だけを念頭に置いてしまうと，場合によっては lingua franca を汎用国際語といったイメージで捉えてしまいがちだが，このように英語以外の言語が主題とされている例文を見ると，その語義を理解する上でバランスがとれる．次に，一般の英英辞書等の記述を見てみよう．

　・ OED2: 2b. lingua franca [It., = 'Frankish tongue']: a mixed language or jargon used in the Levant, consisting largely of Italian words deprived of their inflexions. Also transf. any mixed jargon formed as a medium of intercourse between people speaking different languages.
　・ Web3: 2. any of various hybrid or other languages that are used over a wide area as common or commercial tongues among peoples of diverse speech (as Hindustani, Swahili).
　・ AHD4: 1. A medium of communication between peoples of different languages.
　・ WordNet 2.0: a common language used by speakers of different languages: Koine is a dialect of ancient Greek that was the lingua franca of the empire of Alexander the Great and was widely spoken throughout the eastern Mediterranean area in Roman times.

　ここでは，必ずしも英語びいきではなく，言語学的に精密な定義が目立つ．しかし，OED の定義の後半で一般的に転用された語義として "any mixed jargon . . ." と与えているのは，現行の用法を反映していない古い記述というべきだろう．Web3 の趣旨に添って，"any language or (mixed) jargon . . ." 辺りが適当のように思われる．
　さて，lingua franca の意味が少しずつ浮き彫りになってきた．最も重要な点は，lingua franca の話者には，それを母語とする話者が含まれていないということである．つまり，英語がリンガフランカとして言及される文脈では，英語母語話者のイメージが喚起されない．この意味では，ELF (English as a Lingua Franca) とは ENL (English as a Native Language) に対する用語となる．そして，現代の英語使用を ELF の観点から見ると，lingua franca は「英語母語話者外し」という様相すら帯びることになる．私が適切と評価した「仲介語」や「補助言語」という訳語は響きこそ穏やかだが，lingua franca は，辞書の定義を丁寧に追って行くと，このような強い主張にもつながりうる．英語母語話者外しの潮流については，[2009-10-07-1]の記事「#163. インドの英語のっとり構想!?」や[2010-01-24-1]の記事「#272. 国際語としての英語の話者を区分する新しいモデル」を参照されたい．
