■ #2988. Wycliffe の聖書英訳正当化の口上 [wycliffe][bible][reformation][me_text][literature]

　14世紀後半の Wycliffe （一門）による聖書英訳は，英国史や聖書翻訳史のみならず英語史においても重要なできごとである．ラテン語原典から完訳した英訳聖書として初のものであり，時代をはるかに先取りした「宗教改革」ののろしだった．
　Wycliffe は，いかにして聖書の英訳を正当化しようとしたか．その口上が，Wyclif's Treatise, De Officio Pastorali (Chapter 15) に見られる．中英語テキストの講読に適している箇所と思うので，Crystal (198) に掲載されている校訂テキストを引用しよう．

Also the worthy reume of Fraunse, notwithstondinge alle lettingis, hath translated the Bible and the Gospels, with othere trewe sentensis of doctours, out of Lateyn into Freynsch. Why shulden not Engliyschemen do so? As lordis of Englond han the Bible in Freynsch, so it were not aghenus resoun that they hadden the same sentense in Engliysch; for thus Goddis lawe wolde be betere knowun, and more trowid, for onehed of wit, and more acord be bitwixe reumes.
   And herfore freris han taught in Englond the Paternoster in Engliysch tunge, as men seyen in the pley of York, and in many othere cuntreys. Sithen the Paternoster is part of Matheus Gospel, as clerkis knowen, why may not al be turnyd to Engliysch trewely, as is this part? Specialy sithen alle Cristen men, lerid and lewid, that shulen be sauyd, moten algatis sue Crist, and knowe His lore and His lif. But the comyns of Engliyschmen knowen it best in ther modir tunge; and thus it were al oon to lette siche knowing of the Gospel and to lette Engliyschmen to sue Crist and come to heuene.

　骨子は明確である．お隣のフランスでも翻訳がなされているではないか．また，イングランド庶民にとっても，英語の聖書のほうが理解しやすいではないか．現代の我々にとっては実に明快な理由づけだが，14世紀のイングランドでは，この考え方は異端も異端だった．
　さらに，この時代には，宗教的な異端性もさることながら，高尚なテキストを執筆するのに英語をもってするということ自体が，いまだ確立した慣習とはなっていなかった．もちろん同時代のチョーサーも文学を英語で書いたわけだが，それ自体一種の冒険であり，実験だったとも考えられる．ジャンルにもよるが，「英語で書く」という行為が当然でなかったことは，先立つ初期中英語でもそうだったし，後続する初期近代英語でも然り．関連して，「#2861.
