■ #2999. 標準英語から二重否定が消えた理由 [prescriptive_grammar][negative][double_comparative][syntax][emode][double_negative]

　標準英語の規範文法 (prescriptive_grammar) では，二重否定 (double negative) が忌避される．「#301. 誤用とされる英語の語法 Top 10」 ([2010-02-22-1]) のランキングにも入り込んでいる項目であり，誤用の悪玉のようにみなされている．古い英語では二重否定ばかりか多重否定がごく普通に用いられてきた事実があり，それはこの語法に言語学的な効用が確かにあることを物語っているように思われるが，規範主義の立場からはダメの一点張りである（「#549. 多重否定の効用」 ([2010-10-28-1]) を参照）．
　標準英語における二重否定は，このように18世紀の規範文法の強力な影響下で忌避されるに至り，現在まで敵視されているというのが通常の見方だが，この見方は必ずしも正確ではないようだ．先行研究を参照しつつ Tieken-Boon van Ostade (81) が，次のように指摘している．

Many scholars believe that the disappearance of double negation from standard English was due to the influence of the normative grammarians, but Nevalainen and Raumolin-Brunberg . . . have shown that double negation was already on the way out during the EModE period. The same is true for another 'double' construction, the use of double comparatives and superlatives, no longer in general use either when first condemned by the grammarians (González-Díaz 2008)

　言及されている先行研究に戻って確かめていないが，もしこの見方がより正確なものだとすれば，先に自然の言語使用において二重否定（や二重比較級・最上級）が廃れ出し，その事実を受けて18世紀の文法家がすでに劣勢だった件の構造に駄目を出した，という順序だったことになる．
