■ #2996. 近代英語期の英文法書とレシピ本の共通点 [prescriptive_grammar][recipe][genre][lmode]

　Tieken-Boon van Ostade (138) による後期近代英語の概説書を読んでいて，英文法書とレシピ本に見られる思いも寄らない共通点を教えられた．

Between 1500 and 1850, the number of such books [= cooking recipes] increased dramatically, which, interestingly, shows a parallel with the steep rise in the publication of English grammars since the 1760s . . . . Their reading public was also similar: people who desired access to the 'polite' middle classes, and who needed tools for this, even cookery books. Another similarity is that writers of cookery books often 'copy from existing collections so that such compilations tend to be "improvements" of earlier cookery books' (Görlach 1992: 750).

　まず，両テキストタイプともに，近代期を通じて出版が伸び続けており，とりわけ18世紀後半に増加したという．また，その需要はいずれも上昇志向の強い中流階級に支えられていたという点が指摘されている．いずれも，気品ある紳士淑女にとって「たしなみ」と捉えられていたのである．さらに，著者たちが「改善」と称して，既刊書からのコピペを当たり前のように行なっていたということも共通点だ．現在であれば明らかに剽窃として罰せられるところだが，当時は珍しいことではなかったのだろう．とはいえ，18世紀後半には，顰蹙を買うに足る行為と認識されるようになっていたようである．
　昨今の日本では，結婚相手として男女ともに料理のたしなみが求められるようになってきているようだが，特に日本語文法の知識は求められていない．これはある意味でほっとするところである．18世紀のイギリス社会は， "social climbers" にとって生きるのも楽ではなかったのだなあと考えさせる意外な共通点だった．
