■ #4476. 形態論的透明度の観点からの語彙関係 --- consociation vs. dissociation [lexicology][morphology][etymology][loan_word][word_formation][compound][terminology][lexical_stratification][synonym]

　この概念と用語を知っていれば英語の語彙関係についてもっと効果的に説明したり議論したりできただろう，と思われるものに最近出会った．Görlach (110) が，consociation と dissociation という語彙関係について紹介している（もともとは Leisi によるものとのこと）

Words can be said to be consociated if linked by transparent morphology; they are dissociated if morphologically isolated. Consociation is common in languages in which compounds and derivations are frequent (OE, Ge, Lat). Dissociation occurs when foreign words are borrowed, or when derivations become opaque . . . .

　例えば，heart → hearty → heartiness は形態的に透明に派生されており，典型的な consociation の関係にあるといえる．foul → filth → filthy → filthiness についても，最初の foul → filth こそ透明度は若干下がるが（ただし古英語では音韻形態規則により，ある程度の透明度があったといえる），全体としては consociation の関係といえるだろう．ただ，consociation といっても程度の差のありうる語彙関係であることが，ここから分かる．
　一方，いわゆる英語語彙の3層構造の例などは，典型的な dissociation の関係を示す．「#334. 英語語彙の三層構造」 ([2010-03-27-1]) からいくつか示せば，ask -- question -- interrogate, fair -- beautiful -- attractive, help -- aid -- assistance などだ．「#331. 動物とその肉を表す英単語」 ([2010-03-24-1]) も有名だが，cow -- beef, swine -- pork, sheep -- mutton などの語彙関係も dissociation といえる．
　eye -- ocular などの名詞・形容詞の対応も，dissociation の関係ということになる．ここから日本語に話を広げれば，和語と漢語の関係，あるいは漢字の読みでいえば訓読みと音読みの関係も，典型的な dissociation といってよいだろう．「めがね」（眼鏡）と「眼鏡」（眼鏡）の関係は，上記の eye -- ocular の関係に似ている．関連して「#335. 日本語語彙の三層構造」 ([2010-03-28-1]) も参照されたい．
