■ #566. contronym [antonymy][polysemy][contronym]

　[2010-10-18-1], [2010-11-07-1]で話題にした同音異義衝突 ( homonymic clash ) と関連するが，ある語が相反する2の意味を同時に有することがある．このような語を contronym あるいは Janus-faced word と呼ぶ．
　英語の卑近な例として，out がある．"Stars are out tonight." では「現われている」の意味を，"The lights are all out." では「消えている」をそれぞれ表わす．別の典型的な contronym に sanction がある．この語は「認可，許可」の語義 ( ex. "without the sanction of Parliament" ) と並んで「制裁，処罰」 ( ex. "US sanctions against Cuba" ) の語義をもつ．副詞 fast には「しっかりと」固定する意味 ( ex. "make a boat fast" ) と「素早く」走る意味 ( ex. "run fast" ) とが混在している．quinquennial には「5年間続く」と「5年に1度」の語義がある ( Bryson, pp. 63--64 ) ．
　近年，誤用として問題にされる "infer" も一種の contronym と考えられるだろう．infer は本来「推測する」を意味するが，略式には imply 「暗示する」と同義にも用いられる．話し手Aが暗示するものを聞き手Bが推測するという因果関係なので両語義は結びつくが，心理作用の方向としては反対である．OALD8 の語法解説では，以下のように述べられている．

・ infer / imply
Infer and imply have opposite meanings. The two words can describe the same event, but from different points of view. If a speaker or writer implies something, they suggest it without saying it directly: The article implied that the pilot was responsible for the accident. If you infer something from what a speaker or writer says, you come to the conclusion that this is what he or she means: I inferred from the article that the pilot was responsible for the accident.
??? Infer is now often used with the same meaning as imply. However, many people consider that a sentence such as Are you inferring that I???m a liar? is incorrect, although it is fairly common in speech.

　しかし，Trudgill (5--6) が infer について力説している通り，語用的な文脈や統語的な環境（共起する前置詞が to か from かなど）でいずれの意味で用いられているかが判別できる場合がほとんどで，それほど混同は起こらない．とはいっても，contronym には潜在的に誤解の恐れがあるのは確かであり，infer のような誤用論争の有無を別にしても，いずれかの意味が淘汰されてゆく動機づけや圧力は，contronym でない語に比べれば大きいと考えてよいのではないだろうか．
