■ #692. semantic prosody の特徴 [semantic_prosody]

　最近，何件かの記事で semantic prosody を取り上げてきた ([2011-03-02-1], [2011-03-03-1], [2011-03-04-1], [2011-03-11-1], [2011-03-12-1]) ．先に挙げたもののほかにどのような semantic prosody の事例が指摘されているのかと思い，Hunston に当たってみた．Hunston (60--62) では，句動詞 sit through が「（長々と不愉快でつまらないこと）を聞く」という否定的な評価を伴って使われることをコーパスからの例で明らかにした．LDOCE5 では定義が "to attend a meeting, performance etc, and stay until the end, even if it is very long and boring" として与えられており，次のような例文が挙げられている．

I wasn't the least bit interested in all the speeches I had to sit through.

　Hunston で言及されている他の事例としては，in vain 「（努力と意図を伴った行動が）無駄に（終わる）」，in the sticks 「（都会から）離れて（田舎に）」，off the beaten track 「常道を外れて，慣習を破って（新境地を開いて）」がある．それぞれかっこ内に示した "hidden meaning" が含意されることが多いという．
　Hunston (142) は semantic prosody の特徴を5点にまとめているので，以下に要約して示す．

　(1) semantic prosody は，個々の語に属するものではなく句全体に属するものである．
　(2) semantic prosody は，典型的な用法に従うものであるから（コーパスなどを利用して）多くの例を見なければ把握できない．
　(3) semantic prosody は，評価に関する connotation である．通常 negative，まれに positive な評価を帯びる．
　(4) semantic prosody を示す語句を典型的でない方法で用いることによって，皮肉などを含意することができる．
　(5) semantic prosody は，しばしば話者の意識に上らない．しかし，指摘されれば直感に適合することが多い．

　もう2つ特徴を付け足すとすれば，

　(6) semantic prosody を示す語句が，典型的な hidden meaning と矛盾する文脈に現われた場合には，文脈の力が勝つこともある．Hunston は，sit through が明らかに肯定的な評価をもって使われている例文を挙げ，"In this case, it has to be said that the suggested 'hidden meaning' of SIT through can be overridden by the rest of the context. The connotation applies only in cases where the context does not contradict it." (61--62) と述べている．
　(7) semantic prosody は，[2011-03-12-1]の記事で触れたように，意味論だけでなく文法カテゴリーなど言語の他部門とも深く関わる現象である．

　最後の点に関連して，semantic prosody は語用論とも結び付きそうだ．語句ではなく節の単位での semantic prosody が指摘されており，例えば . . . may not be . . ., but . . . . という譲歩表現では前半部分に話者の理想が含意されているという (Hunston 142--43) ．次の文では，話者は科学者であることが理想だと含意していることになる．

Carey may not be a scientist but he is a doyen of the literary world . . .

　語用論の presupposition とつながってくる観点である．
