■ #1002. this の不定指示形容詞としての用法 [demonstrative][pragmatics][deixis]

　this の用法についての質問が寄せられた．NHKラジオ講座で，Tetsu と Joyce の次の会話が現われたという（赤字は引用者）．

T: You're grinning from ear to ear, Joyce.
J: Tetsu, things are looking up!
T: Really? What's going on?
J: Remember that guy I was telling you about?
T: The new guy who works in your office?
J: Yes! He asked me out to dinner!
T: Excellent! Where's he taking you?
J: We're going to this unique hamburger joint.
T: But aren't you a pescetarian?
J: Not anymore!

　8行目の Joyce の発話にある this がここでの問題である．ここでの文脈を考えても，ハンバーガー店は近辺にないようだ．また，かつてこの2人が行ったことがある店であるという様子でもない．また，このスキットは1回読み切りで，前後の回との関連もない．
　結論からいえば，この this は，Joyce が念頭にある特定の「すごいハンバーガー屋さん」を内面化し，心理的距離が近いものとしてとらえているために発せられた this だろう．聞き手の Tetsu にとっては，具体的にどの店を指しているのかはわからないはずである．不定冠詞 a や，もっといえば a certain に近い用法だが，話者の内面化の事実が強調されている点で，勢いが感じられる．（この趣旨の読みで間違いないことは，英語母語話者の同僚に確認を取った．）
　この用法は，通常，辞書にも記載されており，珍しくはないが，日本語母語話者には感覚がつかみにくい．各学習者英英辞書の記載を，用例とともに比べてみよう．

　There was this big guy standing in the doorway.

MWALED:
5 --- used to introduce someone or something that has not been mentioned yet
<We both had this sudden urge to go shopping.>
笳?This sense of this is often used to produce excitement when telling a story.
<I was walking down the street when this dog starts chasing me. [=when a dog started chasing me]>
<Then these two guys come/came in and start asking her questions.>

　最後の MWALED の記述がほかよりも丁寧だろうか．全体的に言えることは，口語のくだけた文脈で，いきいきした表現を生み出すために，この this が使われているようだ．「物語風の描写」「具体的な名前は挙げずに」「興奮して」という要素を取り出すことができるが，これは，話し手のよく知っている（内面化している）ことを，聞き手には半ば謎めいたままに提示するという結果を生み出している．以上より，当面，この用法を「話し手の一方的な内面化」用法と呼んでおきたい．一般の英英辞書の記述も参考までに挙げておこう．

　最後の SOED の記述によると，20世紀前期からの口語用法ということになり，かなり新しい．もう少し歴史を調べようと，OED を引いてみると，II. Demonstrative Adjective. の 1. d. の語義が SOED のものに近そうだが，厳密に対応しているわけではない．したがって，歴史的な詳細は不明のままだ．中英語まで遡りうるかどうかと思い，MED の "this" (adj.) を参照したが，対応する例はなさそうだ．
