■ #3134. James VI 作の「主の祈り」 [monarch][scottish_english][scots][emode][bible]

　「#1803. Lord's Prayer」 ([2014-04-04-1]) で古英語から現代英語にかけての「主の祈り」のヴァージョンを比べたが，ここに初期近代のスコットランド方言のヴァージョンを加えよう．
　学者肌のスコットランド王 James VI (1566--1625) が，1580年代に韻文版「主の祈り」を自らの Scots 方言で作成していた．本人による手書きのものが London, British Library, MS Royal 18 B.xvi, f. 44 に確認される．James VI は English English ではなく Scots (English) で書くことにためらいを感じていた様子はなく，堂々たる出来映えだ．Crystal (125) より再現しよう．

　このスコットランド王 James VI が，後の1603年にイングランドのスチュワート朝の開祖としてイングランド王 James I ともなるわけだが，そのときに臣下の者たちとともにこの Scots 方言をロンドンの宮廷に運ぶこととなった．はたしてイングランドの民衆は，この方言を権威ある変種として認めたのだろうか．新しい宮廷言語の発生に，少なくともある種のショックは感じたことだろう．逆にいえば，Scots のイングランド英語化が始まった瞬間ともいえるだろう．
