■ #908. bra, panties, nightie [shortening][euphemism][iconicity]

　残念ながら出典は失念したのだが，それを知って以来ずっと気になっていた現象がある．ファッション業界の性癖なのか陰謀なのか，衣服を表わす語には形態的な shortening を経ていたり，指小辞 (diminutive) を付加しているものが多いというものである．標題に挙げた bra (< brassiere), panties (< underpants), nightie (< nightdress) はその一部に過ぎないが，特に女性ものに多いように思われる．衣服を表わす語彙が全体的に女性ものに偏っているということはありそうであり，そのために衣服語の短縮傾向も女性ものに偏っているということなのかもしれない．Web3 の -ie 1b にも次のような記述がある．

　ファッション業界は金の動く産業である．業界による商売戦略だろうかと勘ぐったが，それが成功するのであれば，他の業界も同じ技を利用するはずである．この謎に対して，最近読んでいた Foster (143) がなかなか説得力のある説明を与えてくれており，感心した．

A curious linguistic --- or psychological --- feature is that so many names of women's garments exist in a diminutive form (philologically, that is) ending in -ie, or -ies in the plural. Thus 'nightie', 'cammie' (a spoken form current up to the nineteen-twenties for 'camisole', enshrined in the compound 'cami-knickers'), and the unlovely 'combies', in addition to those incidentally mentioned above. The underlying and unconscious motive is possibly to lend an air of childish artlessness to words which are felt to have some element of taboo attached to them. Smallness in itself is of course supposed to be highly desirable by women in anything concerning their figures . . . .

　ここで提案されているのは，euphemism の作用と，物理的な小ささを望む欲求と言語的な小ささを望む欲求との iconicity の作用が働いているのではないかということである．前者については，[2010-08-09-1]の記事「#469. euphemism の作り方」の (7) を参照されたい．後者については，[2009-08-18-1]の記事「言語は世界を写し出す --- iconicity」を参照されたい．
　いずれにしても，「かわいらしさ」を追求していることは確かだろう．指小辞として -y ではなく -ie の綴字が用いられていることも，ことさらに「かわいらしさ」を演出しているように思える．ここでは，フランス語ゆずりの -e のもつ女性らしさが効いているのではないか．
